Richard B. Highbaugh, age 85, former Tuskegee Airman, passed on Sunday, April 23, 2006, beloved husband of Dolores; devoted father of Claudia and Earl Burton. A private graveside ceremony was held. Biography
Served in the United States Army Air Force 477th Bombardment Group 1943-1944
Tuskegee Airman flying Ace
Richard was born in 1920. He was the son of Richard Highbaugh and Margrave Brown.[1] He grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School, Amherst College, and did graduate work at the University of Chicago.[2]
Richard trained at the Tuskegee Air Pilot Institute in Tuskegee Alabama. He finished his pre-flight training in October of 1943. [3] A year later, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. [4]. He served with the 477th Composite Group and was stationed at Godman field, Kentucky. [5] Richard passed away in 2006.
Richard's brother, Earl, was a Tuskegee airman with the 302nd fighter squadron, stationed in Italy. He was killed on a training mission when his plane collided with a fellow Tuskegee airman who also lost his life in the collision.
