May 30, 1935 - January 31, 2018
A California educator who left a legacy of public service, Dr. Harold Cornelius Haizlip, the son of a Pullman Porter and civil servant in the nation's capital, who rose to become an educational leader and an author, died on January 31st, 2018 in Oakland, California. The cause was congestive heart failure. He was 82. Dr. Haizlip's lifelong mission to encourage promise and create opportunity for children of whom others expected little was indelibly shaped by his own upbringing. The youngest son of Allen Joshua Haizlip and Nellie Mae Hill, Harold graduated valedictorian of his class at Dunbar High School in Washington, DC. He enrolled at Amherst College, graduating cum laude with a B.A. in Latin, Greek, and classical philology. He earned his M.A. in classics and education and his Ed.D in education policy and management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He embarked on a distinguished career as a teacher, educator, and director of foundations, private schools, education systems, community colleges and public-private coalitions. He became the headmaster of the New Lincoln School in New York City, Commissioner of Education for the U.S. Virgin Islands, Vice President of Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York, and Executive Director of LA's BEST After School Arts Program. With his wife, the best-selling author Shirlee Taylor Haizlip, he co-authored the book "In the Garden of Our Dreams: Memoirs of a Marriage." Dr. Haizlip is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Shirlee, two daughters, Deirdre Haizlip Celotto and Melissa Haizlip Wildman, and forever loved by his family. Dr. Haizlip was laid to rest on February 8th, 2018 at Mountain View Cemetery, in Oakland, CA.8888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888888
